About Writing Within and Anne Whitney

Writing Within exists to offer a safe, inclusive space where people can engage in reflective writing as a way to know themselves more fully and live more authentically. We believe that writing is not just for writers—it’s for anyone seeking meaning, clarity, or a place to breathe on the page.

Here, there is no pressure to produce, share, or perform. Just an invitation to write what’s true and let that be enough.

About Anne:

Hi, I’m Anne Elrod Whitney—a writer, teacher, and facilitator who believes in the transformative power of words. For over two decades I’ve supported others in finding their voices as writers and as humans, drawing from my work in education, my lived experience with disability, and my deep belief in the beauty of imperfection.

I created Writing Within as a response to what so many of us crave: honest space. Not polished or performative—just real. Just human. Just enough.

I have twenty five years of background as a teacher of writing, teacher educator, writing researcher, and facilitator. After beginning my career teaching high school English, I earned a Ph.D. in education with a focus on language and literacy education. Since 2006, I have served as Professor of Education at Penn State. I’m the author of four books, the mother of two children, and the “owner” of two crazy mini golden doodles.
